Description
This is a view of USS Macon, ZRS-5, a US Navy dirigible commissioned in the mid-1930's along with her sister ship USS Akron, ZRS-4. Each was lost at sea following two or three years' service. Nearly 800 ft long, Macon flew numerous operational patrols over the ocean, launching and retrieving her four Curtis F9C-2 Sparrow Hawk biplanes, and staying aloft far longer than conventional patrol planes could. Up to five Sparrow Hawks could be stored in Macon's internal hangar. My painting was inspired by several official US Navy photographs now in the public domain, and depicts one plane on the trapeze and three more waiting their turn to hook on and be hoisted aboard.
