Marine Railway at Urk #1

Description
This is one in a series of paintings executed in the style of old tiles from Holland, and the scenes are from a recent trip to The Netherlands. Above all, The Netherlands is a seafaring nation, and interesting boatyards are to be found everywhere. This is the marine railway at Urk, a village important in folklore as an island seaport, but now finds itself on the edge of one of the new polders, land claimed from the sea. UK is the two-letter port code for Urk, and I put 342 on the tug’s bow to recall my old house number on a busy street in The Hague.
